The freight market did not deliver its usual post-Labor Day reset. Tender rejections are rising as diesel reaches record territory, leaving shippers with less capacity and less forgiveness in their routing guides.
What is driving the freight tightening?
The national Outbound Tender Rejection Index reached 14.32% after Labor Day, according to the FreightWaves Market Alert. The increase appeared across Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta, and Harrisburg, not just in storm- or Roadcheck-affected lanes. Rejections often lead spot rates, so shippers should not assume the usual autumn rollover is coming.
Schneider National CEO Jim Filter called the capacity correction “early innings” at Morgan Stanley’s Laguna Conference. Schneider reduced its approved carrier list from roughly 60,000 carriers at peak capacity to about 14,000. Uber Freight estimates that more than 48,000 noncompliant drivers exited the market during the past year.
Why are fuel and compliance costs moving together?
The EIA reported a national diesel average of $6.29 per gallon on September 14, up 68.1% year over year. Refinery utilization is near 97%, while harvest demand, winter heating, and maintenance schedules could add more pressure.
