The global supply chain is hitting a critical inflection point. From a near-standstill in the Strait of Hormuz to seismic shifts in de minimis exemptions and parcel rate hikes, shippers must pivot immediately to protect their margins.

Hormuz in Gridlock

Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has plummeted to just 3 vessels per day: a staggering drop from the 125-daily average. For two consecutive days, zero VLCCs or LNG tankers were recorded transiting the corridor. As US-Iran tensions escalate, insurance premiums and "dark transit" risks are skyrocketing. Expect operational costs to climb as rerouting becomes the new baseline for global energy and commodity flows.

Peak Season Frontloading

US imports surged to 2.25M TEUs in June, up 14.3% YoY. This spike is driven by massive frontloading ahead of the July 24 Section 122 tariff expiration. While ocean rates show early signs of cooling, domestic parcel markets are tightening. Effective July 12, USPS dropped its DIM divisor to 139, pushing average costs up 11.8%. Brands utilizing Mid-Atlantic fulfillment must audit packaging now to mitigate these dimensional weight hikes.

The Regulatory Overhaul

Regulatory walls are closing in. As of July 1, the EU eliminated the €150 de minimis exemption; all commercial shipments now face duties. Simultaneously, the US has indefinitely suspended the $800 de minimis for non-mail modes. With CPSC eFiling now live and US Customs tightening importer vetting, compliance is no longer optional: it is a survival requirement for any 3PL Maryland operation.
