Freight Pulse: Hormuz Tensions, Kenya's New Cargo Rules, and the Capacity Squeeze

Three disruptions hit global supply chains this week — and none of them are letting up.

The Strait of Hormuz is down to a tenth of normal traffic after confirmed LNG tanker strikes and ongoing security threats. A UN-backed proposal to reopen the corridor is on the table, but with ~80 Hong Kong-linked vessels still stuck and Iran demanding inbound control, commercial tanker movement remains effectively frozen.

In the Black Sea, Hapag-Lloyd suspended feeder services to Ukraine's Chornomorsk, Odesa, and Pivdennyi ports, tightening an already strained European trade network and pushing spot rates higher. On the regulatory front, Kenya's new advance cargo declaration (ACD) rules took effect August 1, requiring pre-approval reference codes for containerized imports before loading. Miss it, and cargo doesn't sail.

Domestically, truck capacity continues to tighten as carrier exits mount and the Montgomery v. Caribe Transport ruling raises broker liability standards. That means fewer trucks, more paperwork, and higher rates across the board.
