German port operations face a 48-hour warning strike beginning September 2, CBP will enforce stricter importer-of-record data rules on September 18, and FMCSA is removing or investigating hundreds of driver-training providers. Importers, carriers, and third party logistics providers should act now.

What does the German port strike affect?

The ver.di strike is expected to halt container handling, pickups, deliveries, and transshipment at Hamburg, Bremerhaven, Wilhelmshaven, Bremen, Emden, and Brake through September 4. Ocean, rail, and truck schedules may stay disrupted after terminals reopen as vessels and inland capacity are repositioned.

Importers should request revised terminal cutoffs, confirm demurrage terms, and prioritize time-sensitive cargo. What must importers correct before September 18?

CBP’s Federal Register notice states that inaccurate or incomplete Form 5106 information may result in immediate voiding of an importer-of-record number.

Before the deadline:

• Verify the legal entity name, EIN, mailing address, and physical business address.

• Replace broker, service-center, or P.O. box details where prohibited.

• Confirm the phone number and email belong directly to the importer.

• Confirm the customs broker has a valid power of attorney.

• Document every correction and coordinate with brokers and logistics software teams.

How should fleets prepare for the FMCSA crackdown?

DOJ, DOT, and FMCSA announced emergency removal of more than 110 entry-level driver training providers, proposed removals affecting 160+ more, and a nationwide audit of third-party CDL testers.
