What is changing at the Panama Canal?

Under Panama Canal Advisory A-29-2026, daily capacity will fall effective September 4:

• 9 Neopanamax slots

• 25 Panamax slots

• Panamax capacity falls again to 23 daily slots on September 15

• Neopanamax draft limit remains 14.63 meters (48.0 feet)

• The further reduction to 14.48 meters (47.5 feet) is postponed until October 1

Only confirmed bookings in the Canal’s Transit Reservation System guarantee a transit date. Unreserved cargo may face longer waits, schedule changes, or alternate routing.

How severe is Asia port congestion?

Global schedule reliability fell to 56.4% in July, the lowest level of 2026. Late vessels averaged 6.06 days behind schedule. Shanghai and Ningbo are reporting berthing delays of up to 10–11 days following a record typhoon season, while carriers are omitting ports and routing through regional hubs.

Which regulatory updates require attention?

India’s CBIC extended the SCMTR sea cargo manifest transition deadline to October 31, 2026, under Notification 73/2026-Customs (N.T.). No penal action is expected during the transition.

The IMO’s ISWG-GHG 22 is reconciling proposals for a Net-Zero Framework combining a global fuel standard and GHG pricing. Adoption is expected no earlier than MEPC 85 in late November. The FMC is monitoring potential effects on U.S. commerce.

DOT enforcement also remains active. CVSA Brake Safety Week ran August 23–29, with new truck blitz reporting citing 99 drivers placed out of service. On August 31, FMCSA removed more than 110 ELDT training schools from its registry.
