What changed in North American trade?

U.S.–Canada talks collapsed, leaving 50% U.S. tariffs on approximately $20 billion of Canadian goods effective at 12:01 a.m. ET. Canada will retaliate on roughly $20 billion of U.S. goods beginning September 8. FreightWaves reports shippers are delaying or reprioritizing loads as they reassess landed cost, customs exposure, and customer commitments. Review the Canadian product list before dispatch.

Washington is also preparing a 7.5% tariff on Chinese goods tied to alleged excess manufacturing capacity, potentially before the planned Xi–Trump summit. The Straits Times reports that the measure would be pursued under Section 301.
