Saturday’s freight pulse has four operational warnings: fictitious pickup fraud is exploiting weak warehouse controls, Panama Canal capacity is tightening, fuel haulers have temporary HOS relief, and tariff uncertainty remains unresolved.

How should warehouses stop fictitious pickup fraud?

The Delaware State Police say suspects posing as FedEx drivers used fraudulent IDs, shipping documents, and a fictitious plate to remove more than $680,000 in electronics from a New Castle warehouse. Separate reported cases involved a $586,000 copper load in Illinois, $250,000 in speakers in Nebraska, and a Tennessee-area chicken shipment tied to 13 arrests.

The defense is verification, not paperwork alone.

  • Confirm the carrier, driver, tractor, trailer, and appointment through an independent contact.

  • Match documents against the booking record before releasing freight.

  • Require controlled pickup appointments and documented identity checks.

  • Escalate high-value electronics, metals, and food loads for secondary approval.

What is changing at the Panama Canal?

Since September 15, the Canal Authority has capped daily transits at 32: nine Neopanamax and 23 Panamax vessels. The 14.63-meter, 48-foot draft remains in place, while the planned 47.5-foot limit moves to October 1. The Authority projects roughly 29.5 daily transits for the fiscal year beginning October 1. Review Advisory A-29-2026.

What does the FMCSA fuel waiver allow?

From September 16 through December 16, qualifying interstate gasoline and diesel haulers may drive up to 16 hours in a 24-hour period, subject to required sleeper-berth or off-duty rest and eligibility conditions. The waiver does not remove other safety rules. Carriers should also keep DOT records current ahead of CVSA Brake Safety Week. See the FMCSA notice.

Why should importers watch September 24?

The U.S. has delayed Section 301 excess-capacity tariff announcements covering China and 15 other economies until after the Trump–Xi summit. Discussions reportedly include reciprocal cuts on approximately $30 billion of goods, including LNG. Treat the delay as negotiating space, not resolution.
