Freight Pulse & Law Update: Federal Task Force Hits Trucking Fraud, German Ports Dig Out, and Gulf Tensions Mount
Freight risk is rising on several fronts tonight. FMCSA is invalidating credentials tied to removed ELDT schools while a federal task force targets CDL fraud; UCR costs rise October 1; German port backlogs persist; and Gulf security is restricting ocean routing. Shippers need verified providers, defensible billing records, and live visibility.
What changed in trucking compliance?
FMCSA removed more than 110 CDL training schools from the ELDT Training Provider Registry and proposed removing 160 more. Certificates from removed schools are invalid.
The DOJ-led Crossroads of America task force launched August 31 with DOJ, DOT, DHS, FMCSA, FBI, DEA, HSI, ICE and ATF.
Carriers should verify every provider’s status and confirm driver English proficiency under 49 CFR 391.11.
The finalized 2027 UCR schedule raises fees approximately 20%, effective October 1, from about $55 to $54,165 depending on fleet size. Review the rule.
Which international disruptions require action?
The September 2–4 ver.di strike suspended container handling at Hamburg, Bremerhaven and other German ports. Operations resumed September 4, but rail and inland-freight backlogs remain. Port advisories recommend rescheduling slots and allowing recovery time.
CVSA Brake Safety Week ran August 23–29. Results are pending, but Brake Safety Day earlier this year placed 574 vehicles: 14.3% inspected: out of service. Keep DOT brake inspections, maintenance records and DVIRs audit-ready.
Samsung filed a $186 million FMC claim against CMA CGM over inland transport, demurrage, detention and storage charges, while Hapag-Lloyd revises its $4.2 billion ZIM bid. Hormuz traffic is at its lowest level since May after U.S.–Iranian strikes, with a restricted Gulf corridor expected.
