Global logistics is hitting a fever pitch as escalating conflict in the Strait of Hormuz chokes maritime traffic and new customs regulations overhaul import strategies overnight. Shippers face a "perfect storm" of record-breaking inland rates and a complete collapse of traditional low-value import channels.

Freight Pulse: Rates and Rerouting

Capacity is tightening at a historic pace. Truckload (TL) rates hit 16% above baseline in Q2: a 14-quarter high: with Q3 projected at 17.7%. Less-than-truckload (LTL) is even tighter, currently sitting 76.5% above baseline. This surge is fueled by a 51% YoY jump in diesel prices and a 60% spike in fuel surcharges compared to last year.

Midwest LTL embargoes are forcing shippers to pivot quickly. On the water, the Strait of Hormuz is seeing just 13 vessels per day versus the typical 138 as US/Iran tensions escalate. With oil prices rising and July 24 tariff increases looming, front-loading inventory into a Glen Burnie warehouse or a 3PL Maryland partner is no longer optional: it is a survival tactic.

Law Updates: The End of De Minimis

Compliance just got significantly more expensive. As of July 1, 2026, the EU has abolished the €150 de minimis, replacing it with a flat €3 duty per item. Domestically, US Customs Executive Order 14411 has set a 50% minimum penalty floor for violations. Repeat offenders now face zero mitigation, and bonding minimums are expected to rise.

Simultaneously, the US has slashed the China/HK de minimis threshold from $800 to $200. Whether you are managing a food-grade warehouse or a Hazmat certified 3PL operation, the margin for error has vanished. Strategic Mid-Atlantic fulfillment is now critical to buffer against these rising landed costs and rigorous CBP enforcement.

The Bottom Line: With rates at 15-year highs and enforcement tightening, Lanta Logistics provides the structured, high-performance execution needed to protect your margins.
