Freight Pulse & Law Update: Transpacific Rates Top $10K as CBP Tightens Compliance
Transpacific freight costs and customs exposure are rising together. East Coast spot rates now exceed $10,000 per FEU while importers face stricter CBP identity verification, new cargo-data requirements, and multiple international filing deadlines.
What is driving freight and energy risk?
China–U.S. East Coast spot rates are holding around $10,000–$11,000 per FEU, with West Coast rates near $7,000–$8,000. Shanghai congestion, blank sailings, peak-season demand, and new Panama Canal draught restrictions are limiting flexibility.
The Strait of Hormuz adds energy risk. Following attacks on commercial ships, including the Sinokor-operated VLCC Senegal Prosperity, the United States initiated tanker-for-tanker retaliation. Risk-adjusted tanker rates inside the Gulf have approached $800,000 per day, increasing oil-price volatility and insurance exposure.
U.S. tariffs on selected Canadian goods reached 50%.

Which compliance deadlines matter now?
CBP will begin voiding Importer of Record numbers on September 18 when Form 5106 information is inaccurate or incomplete. Physical addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers must belong directly to the importer: not a broker, forwarder, registered agent, or other third party.
Review all six core IOR data fields before September 18.
CBP’s advance notice on heightened supply chain data requirements carries a December 1 comment deadline.
UAE advance cargo filing became mandatory September 1; enforcement remains phased.
India’s CBIC SCMTR transition runs through October 31, with no penalties during implementation.

How is DOT enforcement affecting transportation?
CVSA Brake Safety Week ran August 23–29, focusing on brake drums and rotors. DOT and state enforcement agencies can remove vehicles with brake-related out-of-service violations. Arizona troopers reportedly removed 119 commercial trucks from I-40 during a targeted brake blitz.
Audit maintenance records, pre-trip inspections, and carrier compliance before tendering freight. For growing brands, third party logistics providers must connect transportation controls with inventory management for ecommerce, a warehouse management system, and logistics software.

Use Lanta Logistics for 3PL fulfillment services, Mid-Atlantic fulfillment, a food-grade warehouse, or a Hazmat certified 3PL: and connect operations through FlowOps by Lanta for real-time visibility across supply chain management companies, 3PL Maryland operations, and the Glen Burnie warehouse.
