The supply chain is hitting a summer boiling point. Between a four-year high in global port congestion and a wave of new customs regulations effective July 1, shippers are facing an increasingly volatile landscape.
Port Bottlenecks and Global Disruptions
The Port of Long Beach reported record June volumes, moving 779,000 TEUs: a 10.6% year-over-year jump. This surge is largely driven by importers front-loading inventory ahead of the July 24 tariff deadline. However, speed comes at a cost: global port congestion has hit an 11% capacity threshold, with 3.4 million TEUs currently idling across Asian and European hubs.
Environmental and geopolitical factors are compounding the strain. Typhoon Bavi recently sidelined 2 million TEUs of capacity in Shanghai and Ningbo, while a toxic gas leak at the Antwerp terminal forced immediate closures. Meanwhile, in the Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports has pushed Brent crude above $85 per barrel. While the KCCI saw its first rate dip in ten weeks, the Drewry WCI remains elevated at $4,639 per FEU, signaling that peak season has arrived early.

A New Era of Regulatory Compliance
July 1 marked a seismic shift in global trade law. The U.S. de minimis threshold for Chinese shipments plummeted from $800 to $200, while the EU abolished its €150 de minimis entirely, replacing it with a €3 flat-rate duty. For e-commerce brands, these changes necessitate a total rethink of cross-border fulfillment strategies.

Compliance deadlines are also tightening. Effective July 8, CPSC eFiling is required for all regulated imports. Furthermore, the FMCSA will implement simplified Hours of Service (HOS) rules on July 22. Navigating these shifts requires more than just a truck; it requires an expert 3PL Maryland partner with enterprise-level standards.
