Panama Canal capacity is tightening just as geopolitical risk continues to reshape global shipping routes. At the same time, CVSA Brake Safety Week has closed with enforcement focused on brake drums, rotors, and the 20% out-of-service threshold.

What is changing at the Panama Canal?

The Panama Canal Authority will reduce daily transit capacity to 34 vessels on September 3 and 32 vessels on September 15, citing reduced watershed precipitation and El Niño-related water pressure. Panamax capacity will fall from 25 to 23 daily slots, while Neopanamax capacity remains at nine.

The Panama Canal advisory warns that vessels without reservations may face longer waits. Auction prices for priority transit have reportedly approached $4 million, while carriers are adding Panama Canal surcharges to some East Coast services.

How is Hormuz pressure affecting freight?

Reported vessel-tracking data show Strait of Hormuz traffic running approximately 95% below pre-war levels. Energy flows are shifting toward the Red Sea, Southeast Asia, Singapore, and Malaysia. Several major carriers have resumed selected Suez Canal transits, but regional security risks remain and schedules are not fully normalized. Read the latest Hormuz traffic analysis.

What did Brake Safety Week reinforce?

CVSA Brake Safety Week ran August 23–29 with special attention to drums and rotors. Inspectors enforced the rule placing a vehicle out of service when 20% or more of its service brakes are defective. During the April 2026 Brake Safety Day, inspectors conducted 4,021 inspections and placed 574 vehicles out of service for brake violations. Results from Brake Safety Week are expected later this year. Review the CVSA campaign guidance.

Fleets should align DOT brake check inspections and safety blitz preparation with documented maintenance, dispatch controls, and driver pre-trip procedures.
