As of August 20, freight risk is splitting by lane: transpacific container rates are rising while Asia–Europe cools, but disruptions across ports, waterways, and regional carriers are keeping supply chain planning under pressure.
Why are freight conditions diverging?
Freightos reports Asia–U.S. West Coast rates up 11% week over week and Asia–U.S. East Coast rates up 1%, while Asia–North Europe rates fell 8%. Selective Suez and Red Sea transits have resumed, but security concerns, insurance costs, and routing uncertainty remain.
Shanghai congestion following twin-typhoon disruption is adding schedule pressure. Low Rhine water levels are also restricting European inland freight, shifting volume toward road and rail. Separately, TP Freight Lines’ sudden Oregon shutdown and reported missed payroll signal continued distress among regional freight providers.
Which shipping rules changed in 2026?
Several requirements now affect documentation and compliance:
Lost containers: IMO mandatory reporting under SOLAS Chapter V/31–32 began January 1, 2026.
China-port shipments: China’s revised Maritime Code took effect May 1, 2026. Chapter IV may apply mandatorily when loading or discharge occurs at a Chinese port.
Emissions: MARPOL Annex VI amendments entered into force March 1, 2026, designating the Canadian Arctic and Norwegian Sea as new emission control areas.
