What is happening at Chinese ports?

Super Typhoon Dolphin has suspended operations at major Chinese ports, disrupting vessel schedules, gate activity, and inland transfers. Expect cargo backlogs to build as terminals reopen and carriers reposition equipment. Confirm revised cutoffs, sailing dates, and transload appointments before committing inventory to a customer promise.

Why are Asia–U.S. rates still elevated?

East Asian port congestion is keeping Asia–U.S. container rates above normal levels. Reported spot ranges are approximately $6,300–$7,500 per FEU to the West Coast and $8,200–$10,500 per FEU to the East Coast. Vessel capacity is stranded while demand remains resilient.

What new route and law changes matter?

South Korea is trialing an Arctic Northern Sea Route connection from Busan to Europe. The summer voyage could inform future Korea–Europe schedules, but ice conditions, sanctions, insurance, and infrastructure remain significant constraints.

The U.S. Jones Act waiver now runs through November 15, 2026, but coverage is narrowed to 237 HTS codes. A new pre-voyage Vessel Availability Request process also requires advance confirmation that compliant U.S.-flag capacity is unavailable.

Which compliance deadlines should shippers watch?

The UK Emissions Trading Scheme now covers qualifying maritime activity from July 1, 2026, including domestic UK voyages and in-port emissions for ships of 5,000 gross tons or more. Meanwhile, CVSA Brake Safety Week ran August 23–29, focusing on brake drums and rotors under the DOT-related inspection program.
