Freight Pulse & Law Update: Blumenthal Orders Russian Diesel Tankers to Reverse Course as Oil Crashes 7% on Iran Talks (Nov. 2, 2026)
Sen. Richard Blumenthal pressed a tanker owner to turn Russian diesel back from New York as Iran diplomacy knocked 7% off oil prices. The ship's arrival, the legal fight and a port strike clock stay live this week.
Why is Blumenthal demanding the tanker reverse course?
In an October 27 letter, Blumenthal urged Eastmed to recall the Agioi Fanendes, which reportedly loaded about 40,000 tonnes at Primorsk and was expected at the Port of New York and New Jersey on Nov. 7. He argues Treasury General License 135, running through April 7, 2027, cannot override the 2022 law banning Russian petroleum imports. A Guardian correction put the wider group at six tankers, roughly 268,000 tonnes, after PVT Azura left the tracker; its operator said it carried fertilizer.
What drove oil down 7%?
Brent fell 7.6% to $104.77 a barrel and WTI dropped 7.3% to $96.46 on Monday, their steepest percentage declines since July 27, after Iran said it had authority to pursue dialogue and reports that President Trump would let negotiations play out. Diesel futures fell 5.4% yet remain nearly 110% higher year to date; the U.S. average diesel price was $6.29 per gallon Monday, up 77% (NBC News).
Is the Los Angeles–Long Beach strike risk over?
No. The PMA and ILWU Local 26 extended their contract through 5 p.m. Pacific on Wednesday, Nov. 4, with federal mediators involved. About 250 watchmen work at terminals handling roughly 85% of Long Beach cargo and 33% of Los Angeles cargo, and a walkout could disrupt gates, yards and vessel operations if others honor picket lines. FreightWaves reports the dispute remains unresolved.
