C.H. Robinson beat Q3 forecasts, yet a Texas judge just affirmed a $604 million crash verdict against the broker, and claims costs are moving freight pricing.

Bottom line: Shares fell 11.14% to $127.60 on Oct. 28 despite a beat, as claims expenses climbed and the company raised full-year SG&A guidance. The market is pricing crash liability into every broker.

What do the verdict and claims costs mean for brokers?

  • The Supreme Court ruled 9–0 in Montgomery v. Caribe Transport II on May 14, ending brokers’ federal shield from negligent-selection suits.

  • A Dallas County judge affirmed the roughly $604 million verdict in Lipe v. Lupus Superior; C.H. Robinson is appealing, per FreightWaves.

  • C.H. Robinson posted revenue of $5.36 billion, up 29.5%, and adjusted EPS of $1.80, up 28.6%. Yet other SG&A rose 29.7% to $176.3 million, mainly on claims. Its release keeps claims below 50 basis points of gross revenue; 2027 insurance figures land in December.

  • NAST truckload price per mile rose 31.5%; cost per mile rose 33.5%. The $5.8 billion RXO deal closes in H1 2027. FreightWaves also reported Landstar shares fell 17.76%.

What do XPO’s results and roadwork signal for shippers?

  • XPO reported Q3 revenue of $2.37 billion and adjusted EPS of $1.70, a $0.12 beat. LTL revenue rose 17.4%; tonnage per day up 5.0%; operating ratio improved 260 bps to 80.1%. See XPO’s release.

  • With LTL margins improving, start 2027 pricing talks early.

Advice: Document carrier vetting, verify insurance certificates and check FMCSA safety records before booking; after Montgomery, an undocumented process is evidence against you.
