Freight markets are tightening across ocean and domestic transportation. Shippers now face higher Hormuz costs, synchronized truckload rate increases, and new compliance expenses before Q4.

What are Maersk’s Hormuz surcharges?

Maersk’s September 9 operational update maintains emergency freight rates and broad booking restrictions for key Gulf markets.

  • 20-foot dry: $1,800 emergency rate plus $1,000 transit fee = $2,800

  • 40-foot dry: $3,000 plus $1,000 = $4,000

  • Reefer, special, or dangerous-goods container: $3,800 plus $1,000 = up to $4,800

Bookings remain suspended or restricted across several Gulf destinations, with limited exceptions such as Jeddah and Sohar. Reprice landed-cost assumptions, confirm routing before tendering, and protect inventory positioned for holiday demand.

Why are truckload rates rising across every equipment type?

FTR/Truckstop data show dry-van, reefer, and flatbed spot rates rising together for the first time since May. DAT’s August 30–September 5 averages reached approximately $2.95 per mile for dry van, $3.54 for reefer, and $3.54 for flatbed.

Uber Freight also warns that tight capacity could drive a Q4 rate surge. Tender rejections near 13.5% indicate more contracted freight is moving into the spot market.

What regulatory changes should logistics teams track?

FMCSA’s final UCR rule raises fees by an average of 20% effective October 1, 2026. The broker-transparency proposal remains under White House OIRA review. CVSA Brake Safety Week, held August 23–29, reinforces the need for documented DOT/CVSA brake inspections before equipment enters constrained lanes.

How can shippers protect service levels?

Use third party logistics providers and supply chain management companies that combine transportation planning with inventory management for ecommerce. Lanta Logistics provides Mid-Atlantic fulfillment from a Glen Burnie warehouse, including food-grade warehouse operations and Hazmat certified 3PL support.
