Ocean freight to the U.S. East Coast is nearing $9,500 per FEU, while new tariffs, tighter trucking capacity, and two major compliance developments are raising the cost of transportation.

Why are trans-Pacific ocean rates still elevated?

According to FreightWaves, East Coast rates are near $9,500 per container, with West Coast rates around $7,600.

Key pressure points include:

  • Higher bunker fuel costs

  • Typhoon-related congestion at Asian container hubs

  • Vessel diversions, blank sailings, and schedule recovery

  • Panama Canal transit constraints

Rates eased slightly last week, but effective capacity remains tight. Importers should avoid assuming that peak-season pricing will unwind quickly.

How are tariffs affecting cross-border supply chains?

Canada’s retaliatory tariffs took effect September 8. The measures apply rates of 15%, 25%, and 50% to roughly C$27.6 billion: about US$20 billion: of U.S. goods.

Steel, aluminum, furniture, appliances, electronics, and other product categories face new costs. Review classifications, country-of-origin documentation, and landed-cost assumptions before booking cross-border freight.

U.S. trucking is tightening as well. Labor Day tender rejections reached their highest holiday levels since 2021, moving above 14%, while spot rates increased approximately 2% month over month.

What does the UCR fee increase mean for carriers?

The approved 2027 UCR fees take effect October 1, 2026. The official UCR schedule shows increases averaging approximately 20%:

  • 0–2 vehicles: $46 to $55

  • 21–100 vehicles: $963 to $1,163

  • 1,001+ vehicles: $44,836 to $54,165

The change affects motor carriers, brokers, freight forwarders, and leasing companies.

What is changing on carrier identity enforcement?

The House REVOKE Act: publicly announced September 4 and recorded as introduced September 2: would strengthen enforcement against “chameleon carriers” that change identities to evade safety actions. Review H.R. 10237.

FMCSA has also removed more than 110 driver-training schools from its registry and joined a multi-agency fraud effort. After CVSA Brake Safety Week concluded August 29, brake and driver qualification checks remain operational priorities.
