U.S. intermodal traffic rose 10.4% in Week 40 as high diesel costs and tight truck capacity steer freight toward rail. 2027 bids already signal rate pressure, and the SBTC’s UCR lawsuit does not pause fees. Compare lanes, lock rates early, and budget while watching the docket.

Why are shippers moving freight to rail?

Week 40 intermodal traffic rose year over year. In Q3, Union Pacific’s domestic intermodal volume climbed 13% for a fifth straight record quarter; CSX intermodal rose 7%. Meanwhile, Knight-Swift says it will seek “low-to-mid double digits” in 2027 truck bids.

  • Compare rail and truck costs lane by lane, including drayage and transit time.

  • Start rate talks early; rail helps, but it is not a guaranteed low-cost escape.

What does the SBTC’s UCR challenge mean for carriers?

The SBTC petition, filed October 20 in the D.C. Circuit, argues that the UCR System Plan was not lawfully established and asks the court to halt fee collection and certain releases of carriers’ personal information. Those are allegations, not a ruling. The roughly 20% 2027 fee increase took effect October 1; keep meeting current obligations and budget for the increase while watching the docket.

CVSA Brake Safety Week ran August 23–29; use inspection findings to close maintenance gaps.

Why does inventory visibility matter during peak?

Census data puts the August inventory-to-sales ratio at 1.33, down from 1.40 a year earlier; sales rose 10.2% year over year versus 4.6% for inventories. The measure covers businesses broadly, not e-commerce alone, but leaner stock makes real-time inventory management for ecommerce critical.

Amazon plans to hire more than 300,000 holiday workers, 20% above last year, with more than 9,000 openings in the New York City metro. Peak hiring adds pressure on regional freight and Port of NY/NJ capacity. Book drayage and receiving windows early.

Key takeaway: Secure 2027 options now, keep UCR obligations current, and track inventory and inbound appointments closely.
