Freight Pulse & Law Update: Ocean Rates Near $9,500, Canadian Tariffs Hit, and CBP Reworks Import Disclosures
Bottom line: Freight costs and compliance requirements are tightening simultaneously. Trans-Pacific spot rates are near $7,600 per FEU to the West Coast and $9,500 per FEU to the East Coast, while new tariffs, customs disclosure proposals, carrier rules, and trucking fees require immediate planning.
What changed in freight markets and trade policy?
Typhoon congestion at Asian hubs, blank sailings, and higher bunker fuel costs linked to Strait of Hormuz tensions are supporting elevated ocean rates. Canada’s retaliatory tariffs also took effect September 8, covering approximately $20 billion of U.S. goods at rates of 15%, 25%, and 50%.
For importers, update landed-cost models, country-of-origin data, and routing plans. The Canadian tariff schedule identifies affected sectors including steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics.
Which compliance deadlines require action?
Key dates include:
September 30: Maersk’s EU ICS2 “No MRN, No Load” policy begins.
October 1: 2027 UCR fees rise approximately 20%.
November 15: The Jones Act waiver expires, with a narrower product list and mandatory pre-voyage approval.
December 1: Comments are due on CBP’s 91 FR 56408 ANPRM, which considers foreign export declarations, global business identifiers replacing MIDs, and potentially shortening the current 15-day entry filing window.
These proposals are not yet binding, but document readiness matters now.
How should logistics teams prepare?
Use real-time supply chain visibility across warehousing, fulfillment, and transport. FlowOps by Lanta helps third party logistics providers and supply chain management companies coordinate inventory management for ecommerce, 3PL fulfillment services, and exception response.

Treat CVSA Brake Safety Week, held August 23–29, as a baseline — not a yearly endpoint — for brake inspection readiness. The same discipline applies across a 3PL Maryland operation, Mid-Atlantic fulfillment network, food-grade warehouse, Hazmat certified 3PL, or Glen Burnie warehouse.
Lanta Logistics delivers structured freight, fulfillment, and compliance execution, with FlowOps real-time visibility and platform comparison details for growing supply chains.
