August 16, 2026 : Ocean freight is tightening for supply-side reasons, geopolitical routing is being rewritten, and recent court decisions are raising the compliance bar for carriers and shippers.

Why are China–North America rates rising?

Freightos data shows China-to-North America spot rates climbing since late July:

  • East Coast: up approximately $413

  • West Coast: up approximately $1,328 as of August 13

The increase is not primarily demand-driven. Capacity constraints, weather-related port disruption, equipment shortages, and congestion are doing the damage. Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd have warned that port and trucking bottlenecks could create further delivery delays and rate pressure.

How are Hormuz and Arctic routes changing logistics?

Strait of Hormuz traffic is shifting toward a Tehran-controlled northern corridor as attacks concentrate on vessels using alternative routes. Many operators are avoiding the chokepoint entirely, adding time, insurance exposure, and fuel costs.

At the same time, China’s first scheduled weekly Arctic container service reportedly departed Ningbo for Felixstowe on August 15. The seasonal Northern Sea Route could shorten China–Europe transit times, but ice, insurance, port access, and geopolitical risk remain significant constraints. gCaptain reports on the service.

What did the FMC and D.C. Circuit confirm?

The D.C. Circuit upheld the FMC’s ruling that detention and demurrage fees must promote “freight fluidity.” Fees charged during a port closure were unreasonable where a trucker had no practical ability to retrieve or return equipment. Read the FMC decision summary.

The court also upheld the FMC’s unreasonable-refusal-to-deal framework, including annual documented export-policy filing requirements. Meanwhile, SOLAS/MARPOL 2026 container-loss reporting rules are now in force.

The Department of Transportation’s CVSA Brake Safety Week runs August 23–29. Inspect drums, rotors, and records before the blitz.
