Two hard deadlines arrive within ten days. LTL pricing increases October 5, while the FMCSA’s temporary paper medical-card exemption ends October 11.

What changes on October 5 and October 11?

Old Dominion Freight Line’s 4.9% general rate increase takes effect October 5-one month earlier than last year. ArcBest already implemented 5.9% in June and Saia 7.1% in July, leaving many early-2026 LTL assumptions understated for Q4. On October 11, FMCSA’s National Registry II transition exemption expires.

  • Audit driver MVRs and medical-certification status now.

  • FMCSA says no further nationwide waivers are planned.

  • A driver without current National Registry medical certification may not be qualified to operate a CMV.

  • Review the FMCSA notice.

Why should shippers revise Q4 freight plans?

Truckload tender rejections remain above 14% entering Q4 as smaller carriers face diesel pressure and exit the market. Mid-October is the practical deadline for Q4 rate submissions before peak demand absorbs capacity. Domestic intermodal also reached a record pace above 21,000 containers in a week, while FedEx has announced a 5.9% 2027 increase and UPS is expected to follow.

  • Golden Week runs October 1–7, pausing Chinese bookings and clustering imports into November arrival windows.

  • CVSA Brake Safety Week ran August 23–29, focusing on brake drums and rotors; keep DOT brake-inspection records current.

  • See the ODFL rate announcement.
