Global container rates are up 143% year over year as congestion removes roughly 12% of effective vessel capacity. Truckload and parcel costs are also tightening, while FMCSA offers temporary USDOT filing relief: not a permanent compliance waiver.

Why are freight costs rising across ocean and truckload markets?

Ocean congestion and typhoon-related delays in Asia are restricting available capacity. Approximately 3.9 million TEU is tied up, supporting elevated rates across major lanes. Truckload pricing remains firm even after a 15% post-Labor-Day volume decline.

  • Truckload spot rates: approximately $3.44 per mile

  • Tender rejections: near 14.5%

  • Reefer capacity: tighter than dry van

  • Diesel: approximately $5.60–$5.97 per gallon

Recent container market data confirms that congestion, weather disruption, and constrained effective capacity: not fleet size alone: are driving the increase.

What should shippers expect through late September?

Parcel networks are adding peak surcharges as operating costs and demand increase. Amazon, UPS, and FedEx are expected to roll out surcharges from late September through October. New U.S.-Canada reciprocal tariffs took effect September 8, while the U.S.-China summit on September 24 could alter trade planning.

Shippers should review landed costs, carrier allocation, safety stock, and fulfillment timelines now. Coordinate with third party logistics providers before peak volume exposes weak points in your supply chain.

What changed in FMCSA compliance?

FMCSA has temporarily suspended USDOT deactivations for missed biennial updates due on or after June 1, 2026, during the MOTUS rollout. The relief remains in effect until further notice, but the filing obligation remains.

  • Broker transparency: still in final White House/OIRA review, not final

  • 2027 UCR fees: rise approximately 20% October 1, with $55–$54,165 brackets

  • CVSA Brake Safety Week: held August 23–29; official results are not yet released
