As of October 15, freight signals are mixed: Panama Canal capacity is expanding, truckload rates are firming, and container pricing has turned upward after an earlier weekly decline. Importers and carriers should also track CBP’s November 30 compliance date, the FMCSA sleeper-berth pilot comment deadline, and verify local closure notices before dispatch.

What changed in ocean and truckload markets?

The Panama Canal Authority’s Advisory A-36-2026 raises daily Neopanamax slots to 10 from October 15, bringing total capacity across all locks to 33. It sets the maximum draft at 49.0 feet. The Authority cites improving water conditions; the added capacity also comes amid reported Hormuz-related rerouting pressure.

The Drewry World Container Index rose 3% to $4,485 per FEU on October 15. CCFGroup still expects Q4 rates to ease from Q3 peaks as carriers manage capacity with blank sailings ahead of 2027 contract talks.

DAT’s latest report lists linehaul spot rates at $2.26/mile for dry van, $2.75 for reefer, and $2.65 for flatbed. FreightWaves/SONAR puts tender rejections near 14%, despite soft demand.

What compliance dates should operators watch?

CBP’s CTPAT alert outlines due-diligence requirements for brokers representing foreign importers of record, with implementation tied to November 30. Separately, the FMCSA pilot notice proposes 5/5 and 6/4 sleeper-berth splits; comments are due December 7. The pilot is not a general rule change.

What’s the Mid-Atlantic operating note?

The stated East McComas Street ramp closure (October 19–28) and I-195 lane closures (October 20–21 and 27–28) could not be verified in current MDTA advisories. Confirm schedules with MDTA before routing Baltimore drayage. CVSA Brake Safety Week, focused on brake drums and rotors, ran August 23–29.

For 3PL Maryland and Mid-Atlantic fulfillment operations, Lanta Logistics pairs logistics execution with FlowOps by Lanta, an operator-built warehouse management system with real-time visibility, unlimited SKUs, 20+ modules, and patent-pending Agentic AI.
