Bottom line: The shorter Red Sea route is bringing ships into ports earlier, adding to vessel bunching even as demand cools. Asia-Europe spot rates rose in the week ending Oct. 30. Separately, Grimaldi says it may redeploy ships if U.S. Section 301 fees resume, putting some auto and ro-ro capacity at risk.

Why are Asia-Europe rates rising as Red Sea sailings return?

The Red Sea return is substantial but not yet a return to normal schedules. Alphaliner counts 24 of 46 direct Asia-Europe services using the route, about 63% of deployed capacity. Ships arriving ahead of schedules built for the longer Africa detour can bunch at terminals, supporting rates despite softer demand.

  • Asia-North Europe spot rates rose 3% to $3,551 per FEU; Mediterranean rates rose 8% to $4,252. (FreightWaves)

  • Shanghai–Los Angeles fell 6%, while Shanghai–New York fell 5% in the same week. (FreightWaves)

Could U.S. port fees put vehicle-carrier capacity at risk?

Yes. Grimaldi told USTR on Oct. 30 that it could redeploy vessels from U.S. trades unless Section 301 fees on car carriers are permanently suspended. If the suspension lapses, auto shippers could face tighter roll-on/roll-off capacity.

  • Grimaldi says 86% of its U.S.-trade cargo is tied to American carmakers. (gCaptain)

  • The current suspension ends Nov. 9; USTR proposed extending it to Jan. 9, 2027. (Holland & Knight)

Advice: If you move autos or ro-ro freight, model a January capacity squeeze now; for Europe-bound cargo, add buffer days to inland delivery windows.

  • Northbound I-95 Girard Point Bridge: overnight lane restrictions Nov. 2–6, including double-lane closures midnight–5 a.m. (PennDOT)

  • US 322/Conchester Highway: 24/7 lane closures between I-95 and Route 452 through Dec. 21. (PennDOT)

Safety reminder: Expect shifted lanes and reduced shoulders in overnight work zones; slow down, and remember fines are doubled.
