Freight Pulse & Law Update: CBP Wants to See Inside Your Supply Chain as Maersk Puts $5,700 on a Houston Box
CBP has opened a comment window on a proposal that could force importers and foreign suppliers to disclose how goods are sourced, produced and priced, and Maersk's revised peak surcharges from the Indian Subcontinent and Middle East run as high as $5,700 per container.
What would CBP's supply chain disclosure rule require?
Comments are due December 1 on the advance notice of proposed rulemaking "Heightened Import Disclosures for Supply Chain Visibility." CBP's example: for cake imports, the agency wants to know where each ingredient was purchased, originated and what it cost.
The push fits CBP's agenda under Executive Order 14411: CBP's Shane Campbell told industry groups that "importing is a privilege and not a right," and that more than 5 million inactive, dormant or problematic importer of record records have been removed.

Comment by December 1, while the rule's scope is still open.
