Freight Pulse & Law Update: Typhoon Champi Grounds 75 Freighters as Taiwan's Customs Shutdown Stretches to Four Days
Typhoon Champi disrupted Taiwan’s export pipeline on October 23, and the backlog will outlast the storm. With Friday’s work suspension and the October 26 holiday, clearance faces a four-day bottleneck; forwarders reopen Tuesday, October 27.
What happened to Taiwan’s air freight?
Taoyuan canceled 596 flights from midnight to 9 a.m. Friday, including 75 cargo flights. Taiwan’s Civil Aviation Administration counted 977 cancellations from October 22 through 10 a.m. October 23, per Focus Taiwan. EVA Air canceled long-haul Taiwan–Europe and Taiwan–U.S. flights later Friday, cutting belly-cargo space.
Air exports: Treat Taipei capacity as unavailable until Tuesday. Rank shipments by value and deadline, then give consignees dated delay estimates now.
Recovery pressure: Taipei space was already tight on AI-server demand. Rolled cargo will compete with freight booked for Tuesday and Wednesday. Champi’s 75 canceled cargo flights exceed the 29 canceled in Typhoon Kong-rey, 2024.
Where could ocean freight be delayed?
SEKO’s weather center reports suspensions at Keelung, Taipei Port, Taichung and Kaohsiung, with Kaohsiung’s CCKT yard above 90% utilization. China set Zhejiang to Level III and Shanghai and Fujian to Level IV emergency response; Yangshan waits already run four to seven days. Expect rolled late-October bookings from Shanghai, Ningbo, Xiamen and Fuzhou.
What should shippers do now?
Confirm revised bookings directly with carriers before Tuesday.
Notify consignees with dated estimates.
CVSA Brake Safety Week ran August 23–29, 2026; maintain current vehicle maintenance and inspection records.
