Freight Pulse & Law Update: Hormuz Disruptions, Typhoon Congestion, and the Rate Divide
Why is Hormuz traffic disrupting global freight?
Strait of Hormuz traffic has fallen to its lowest level since May after reported U.S.–Iranian strikes on tankers. Iran is also planning a new restricted zone. The result is reduced tanker movement, elevated war-risk exposure, bunker fuel shortages, and higher operating costs across ocean logistics.
Tanker traffic: sharply reduced
Security: restricted-zone planning and escort risk
Cost impact: fuel, insurance, and rerouting pressure
How are typhoons affecting East Asian ports?
Five typhoons are disrupting 14 major East Asian ports, pushing global port congestion above 4.3 million TEU. Repeated closures and vessel bunching are reducing schedule reliability, delaying equipment repositioning, and increasing rollover, demurrage, and detention risk for shippers.

Why are freight rates moving in opposite directions?
Transpacific spot rates are strengthening as congestion tightens effective capacity. Asia–Europe rates are declining from earlier peaks as some carriers resume Suez transits and release capacity. Bunker fuel shortages and higher voyage costs remain a counterforce, keeping pricing volatile rather than predictable.
Track these facts daily:
Transpacific: firmer spot market
Asia–Europe: easing, but still elevated
Reliability: materially weaker across affected networks
What should carriers and shippers do now?
FMCSA’s final UCR rule raises 2027 fees by approximately 20%, effective October 1, 2026. Fees range from $55 to $54,165. Fleets should also prepare for CVSA Brake Safety Week, August 23–29, 2026, with DOT/CVSA inspections emphasizing brake drums and rotors.
