Freight conditions are turning, but operators face higher costs, tighter compliance exposure, and uneven corporate performance. Cass reported an 11.3% year-over-year increase in truckload linehaul rates in August, while shipments rose for the first time in 42 months.

What changed in the freight market?

Key August indicators from Cass Information Systems include:

  • TL linehaul rates: +11.3% year over year

  • Shipments: +2.1% year over year and +5.6% month over month

  • Freight expenditures: +18.7% year over year

  • Diesel prices: +46% year over year

ArcBest also reported 9% daily tonnage growth in August, accelerating from July, and raised its asset-light third-quarter operating income guidance to $10 million–$12 million. These figures point to improving demand, but diesel and capacity costs will continue pressuring margins.

Why does Hub Group matter?

Hub Group expects a Nasdaq delisting notice after missing financial reporting deadlines tied to an accounting error. It plans to appeal to the Nasdaq Hearings Panel, and trading continues during the process. The company also flagged a first-half 2026 operating loss.

Shippers should review carrier financial resilience, backup capacity, and visibility: not react to one headline.

Which compliance deadlines require action?

  • FMCSA’s 2027 UCR fees take effect October 1, 2026, with bracket increases ranging from $9 to $9,329.

  • FMCSA temporarily paused USDOT deactivation enforcement for missed biennial updates due on or after June 1 during the MOTUS rollout. The filing requirement remains.

  • DOT and CVSA inspections remain operational priorities. Brake Safety Week ran August 23–29; official aggregate results are pending. Inspectors continue targeting brake systems, drums, rotors, air leaks, and defective components. See CVSA results.
