Direct answer: Reprice Q4 now. Confirmed 2026–27 peak surcharges from UPS, FedEx, USPS, OnTrac, and Amazon Shipping are rising roughly 9%–25%, while rail, drayage, and selected air lanes are tightening before holiday volume arrives.

What changes for parcel shippers before Q4?

The peak window begins in late September or October and runs into mid-January 2027. Residential, economy, additional-handling, large-package, and over-maximum fees carry the greatest margin risk.

  • UPS and FedEx: Higher demand, handling, and oversize charges.

  • USPS: Weight-banded peak fees increase costs for heavier parcels.

  • OnTrac and Amazon Shipping: Comparable demand and handling pressure across regional and alternative networks.

  • FedEx: New regional-carrier and zone-skipping programs are changing lane economics and forcing 3PLs to reprice before volume accelerates.

Review the latest parcel surcharge analysis, then model cost by SKU, zone, dimensional weight, and service level.

Why are intermodal and drayage markets tightening?

North American intermodal volumes rose 15.9% year over year, according to recent rail data. Congestion is elevated at Chicago, Memphis, and Atlanta terminals, while select markets face tight railcar supply.

Import frontloading, chassis shortages, stricter driver enforcement, and rising dwell times are also tightening drayage around major port complexes. Air cargo offers no traditional peak surge, but Asia–North America capacity is tightening. Secure critical space early instead of treating air freight as a last-minute rescue option.

What should 3PLs do now?

Third party logistics providers should diversify carriers, reduce oversize exposure, and build dwell-time buffers. CVSA Brake Safety Week, held August 23–29, 2026, also reinforces the need to verify fleet maintenance, driver qualification, and contingency capacity.
